Mechanics: Identify, describe and apply principles of mechanical energy

Subject outcome

Subject outcome 2.3: Identify, describe and apply principles of mechanical energy.

Learning outcomes

  • Define mechanical energy, kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy.
  • Calculate kinetic energy ([latex]\scriptsize {{E}_{\text{K}}}=\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}m{{v}^{2}}[/latex]) and gravitational potential energy ([latex]\scriptsize {{E}_{\text{P}}}=mgh[/latex]).
  • Define the law of conservation of mechanical energy.
  • Solve problems using the conservation of mechanical energy
    ([latex]\scriptsize {{E}_{\text{M}}}={{E}_{\text{K}}}+{{E}_{\text{P}}}[/latex]).

Unit 1 outcomes

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

  • Define mechanical energy.
  • Define kinetic energy.
  • Define gravitational potential energy.
  • Calculate kinetic energy ([latex]\scriptsize {{E}_{\text{K}}}=\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}m{{v}^{2}}[/latex]).
  • Calculate gravitational potential energy ([latex]\scriptsize {{E}_{\text{P}}}=mgh[/latex]).

Unit 2 outcomes

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

  • Define the law of conservation of mechanical energy.
  • Solve problems using the conservation of mechanical energy ([latex]\scriptsize {{E}_{{\text{mechanical}}}}={{E}_{\text{K}}}+{{E}_{\text{P}}}[/latex]).
